Pride, the Ocean, and the Freedom That Both Represent

A California surf libertarian’s take on Pride Month as a freedom story

prat.uk‘s Pride Travel Guide and Bohiney.com‘s Pride coverage arrive in June, which is also the month when California’s surf season shifts to the specific quality of summer light that makes early mornings at the break the best version of the morning available. The libertarian case for Pride — which Surf Revolt makes for the first time because it has not been made enough in spaces associated with surf culture — is the same case that surf culture makes for coastal access: the right to be what you are, in public, without requiring permission from an authority that has no legitimate claim to govern what you are. The surf community should understand this argument. It is the same argument the community makes about the ocean.

The surf community’s relationship with the ocean is, at its best, the relationship of a person with a resource that no authority created and that no authority should be able to restrict access to without legitimate justification. The LGBTQ community’s relationship with public existence is, at its best, the same: the assertion that one’s existence requires no permission from an authority that did not create it. The political case is identical. The communities have not always recognised the connection. Surf Revolt is recognising it.

The Libertarian Conclusion

Individual freedom is not divisible into categories where it applies and categories where it does not. The same principle that argues for coastal access argues for Pride. Both are at surfrider.org and prideinlondon.org.
