The 2026 finding: the correlation between GPS-measured wave speed and judged score has remained stable at 0.64 over three consecutive event years, confirming that the correlation is a property of the break and the judging criteria rather than a statistical artifact of a single event. The athletes who score highest in consecutive Trestles events are consistently the ones who produce the highest speed in the wave’s high-speed sections and the highest technical execution in the wave’s technical sections, not the ones who produce the highest average speed across the whole ride.
The Katz application deepened: the 2026 data allows more granular analysis. The athletes who attempt to maximise speed across the entire ride — the Katz approach — score in the 60th to 70th percentile of total heat scores. The athletes who contextualise speed appropriately — maximising it where the wave permits, reducing it where precision is required — score in the 80th to 90th percentile. The difference is not in the athletes’ physical capacity for speed. The difference is in the decision-making about when to deploy it. Katz’s maximum speed was genuine. The decision to always maximise it is the decision that produces the Trestles 65th-percentile outcome rather than the 85th-percentile outcome. The decision is correctable. The capacity is not the limiting factor.
